This is what remains of the once pristine environment of #KangarooIsland – now a barren burned land after the weekend’s fires Considered a ‘Noah’s Ark’ and a refuge for animals, ecologists have grave fears for the future of many species, including koalas, kangaroos and rare birds. For some the island is their only known habitat. The island’s population of endangered glossy black-cockatoos – a unique subspecies – has been the subject of two decades of community conservation work Prof Corey Bradshaw, an ecologist at @FlindersUniversity, said they had grave concerns for the dunnarts and the cockatoos. “How this is going to impact the long-term efforts is unknown,” he said, but added: “We have been predicting this for so long. It is extreme events – whether it’s drought, flood, cyclones or fires – that drives things to extinction.” .
